Description
This painting, completed in December 2017, shows a wet day in the city of Southampton. The particular street is Portland Terrace, which is very close to the medieval city wall. Pictured are members of the public using a crossing mainly to go in, or leave the large West Quay shopping centre. One of the entrances is shown on the left hand side. It is a miserable day with the streets wet and daylight dull, but offers visual interest with the daily and ordinary activities of the hour being reflected by the wet surroundings.
The artwork is painted on a 36” x 24” canvas, with oil paint, and took most of a month to do. It is based on a number of photographs, re composited in photoshop to create the final composition.
During early 2018, the local and important Southampton Gallery exhibited this painting, and two others which were selected for an open art competition, the theme being 'seasons'. As it turned out, this painting won 1st prize out of over 500+ works.
