Description
Created in 1476 by Verrocchio, who was Leonardo's teacher. This statue stood in the Medici family rural villa before Cosimo I brought it to Palazzo Vecchio and placed it in the courtyard. It replaced Donatello's David which stood here prior.
A replica now stands in the courtyard, and the original (this one) is inside Palazzo Vecchio in the Apartments of the Elements, Cosimo's personal living rooms.
This was Verrocchio's most popular work, it was designed as the center of a fountain - the dolphin spouted a jet of water, as if responding to the hug.
