Artist's Description
It's sandstone, not sand, and I called it the Sandcastles because that's what it reminded me of. The colors of this landscape change constantly, depending on the time of day, sky and rain. We arrived early one morning after a rain the night before and was amazed at the range of colors. During the bright afternoon, everything appears white.
This is a 4-image panorama from "the Tepees" in Petrified Forest. Not many people take the time to hike in this park, even on the improved trails - even fewer people get to see places like this. The Tepees will lead you up to Blue Mesa while crossing 4 million years of geological time. We found lots of early dinosaur bones laying all over the place up here, along with petrified wood! The views and landscape are incredible.
This image was shot during my tenure as the resident artist in the "Artist in Residence" program at Petrified Forest National Park.
About Melany Sarafis
Melany Sarafis served her country for 24 years and recently retired from the USAF as a First Sergeant. After taking an Art History course and learning a little about the Renaissance, I've become enamored with this art era. I took a trip to Florence Italy (the home of the Renaissance)...
